Salish Kootenai College Announces Planned Transition to Séliš Ksanka Ql̓ispé University

PABLO, Mont. — Salish Kootenai College announced today its planned transition to Séliš Ksanka Ql̓ispé
University during a press conference at the Johnny Arlee & Vic Charlo Theatre.
The proposed name recognizes all three Tribes of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Nations and
reflects the institution’s growth in academic offerings, including graduate-level education. The College’s
mission and vision remain unchanged.
“We are proud to honor that legacy as we begin this next chapter together.” President Munson said.
The College expressed heartfelt gratitude to the McDonald family for affirming President McDonald’s
vision and sharing their blessing for this next step. It also recognized former Board Member Germaine
White, who initiated and led the early name change effort, including critical conversations with the
family.
The College also acknowledged the CSKT Tribal Council’s support and guidance as it continues through
the approval process with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
The name change is anticipated to take effect in September of 2027, coinciding with the College’s 50th
Anniversary celebration, subject to the remaining approval and implementation steps. The institution
will continue operating as Salish Kootenai College until the change takes effect, with updates shared as
the transition progresses.
