As Officer Wharton initiated the stop along Highway 93 near Rocky Point, the suspect opened fire,
striking his patrol vehicle multiple times and shattering the windshield. Despite coming under immediate

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL to Officer Michael Wharton
On February 14, 2025, at approximately midnight, Officer Michael Wharton of the Polson Police
Department performed his sworn duty with extraordinary courage and devotion to the safety of his
community.
While attempting to conduct a routine traffic stop on a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed
and without functioning taillights, Officer Wharton was unaware that the driver he was about to engage
was a dangerous fugitive who had allegedly just committed a brutal homicide and was fleeing from
justice.
As the suspect’s vehicle came to a halt along Highway 93 near Rocky Point, the encounter
escalated without warning. The suspect opened fire on Officer Wharton’s patrol vehicle, striking it
multiple times and shattering the windshield. In that moment of sudden and grave peril, Officer Wharton
remained steadfast and resolute. Despite the hail of gunfire, he initiated pursuit as the suspect attempted to
flee, displaying remarkable calmness, determination, and valor.
Although his patrol vehicle was ultimately disabled by the continuing gunfire, Officer Wharton’s
actions were not in vain. His immediate courage under fire, his refusal to yield in the face of mortal
danger, and his rapid pursuit created the critical conditions that allowed responding officers to locate and
apprehend the suspect in the Elmo area without further bloodshed. Only later would it be confirmed that
the alleged suspect had been fleeing the scene of a homicide.
Officer Wharton sustained minor injuries from flying glass when bullets pierced his windshield,
yet he pressed forward in his duty undeterred. His actions reflect not only uncommon bravery, but also an
unyielding dedication to the principles of service, sacrifice, and protection of the innocent.
By placing himself in harm’s way, Officer Wharton embodied the highest ideals of law
enforcement and brought honor to himself, his department, and the City of Polson. His actions directly
contributed to the capture of a violent and dangerous individual, safeguarding the lives of countless
others.
For his extraordinary valor, unshakable courage, and distinguished service under fire, Officer
Michael Wharton is hereby awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. Let this medal stand as a lasting
testament to Officer Wharton’s heroism, and may his example inspire all who wear the badge to serve
