Polson Police Department Receives Traditional Salish Coup Stick in Historic Presentation

On March 3, 2025, during the Polson City Commission meeting, Polson Chief of Police George
Simpson was honored with a Traditional Salish Coup Stick, presented by Ken Camel. The
presentation marked a significant moment in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the relationship
between the Polson Police Department and both tribal and non-tribal members of the community.
“My name is Ken Camel I’m from this place we call our home. I live in the Mission Valley.
We’ve come a long ways, people. A long ways.”
During his presentation Mr. Camel explained that the Coup Stick, also known as a “greeting
stick,” is a symbol of honor, peace, and trust. Historically, Salish warriors carried the Coup Stick
not as a weapon, but as a gesture of greeting and respect — a way to signify that those who were
touched by it were recognized as friends. The modern interpretation presented to the Polson
Police Department was carefully crafted to reflect the department’s colors and included the
Polson Police badge placed at the center of a traditional medicine wheel.
“Mr. Camel’s incorporating the medicine wheel reminds us of the importance of balance —
mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional — in the work we do every day as officers serving our
entire community,” said Chief Simpson. “It is an incredible honor to receive this symbol of unity
and trust.”
During the presentation, Mr. Camel emphasized the importance of recognizing how far the
community has come in strengthening relationships between tribal and non-tribal residents —
while acknowledging there is still work to do. The Coup Stick will serve as a visible reminder of
this ongoing collaboration and commitment, proudly displayed at the Polson Police Department.
“The men and women of the Polson Police Department are committed to respecting the rights,
individuality, and dignity of every member of our community,” said Chief Simpson. “This honor
is not lost on us, and we will continue to safeguard the trust and respect that this gift represents.
We are grateful for this gesture, and we look forward to continuing to work together to make
Polson a better place for all.”
The Polson Police Department thanks Mr. Camel for his generosity, wisdom, and vision for a
future where all members of the community work together with understanding, respect, and
shared purpose.
